State Regulations in Colorado I'm located in Colorado, and as such my practice as a hypnotherapist is regulated by the state as a "non-licensed psychotherapist." Please see the state's Department of Regulatory Agencies for more details.
Each state has their own rules governing these practices; some have no rules at all.
As part of the regulations I must abide by, I cannot offer distance hypnotherapy (live either via the Internet or telephone) to anyone I have not seen in person in my office at least once.
I know there are many others out there who will do remote sessions with you (especially from other states) and if you're a past client I see no problem with it. If, however, you have never seen the therapist in person, then I do have some issues with it.
Because of my background in many forms of communication, I can tell you from experience that most communication between humans is non-verbal. When you limit the communication to the telephone or e-mail, 90% of the total communication with that person is gone. The eye contact, the voice inflections, the body language, and so forth.
